Is farming and stockmanship nature or nurture? Our farming experience goes back three generations to a small family farm in the Lancashire Pennines, via Edingale and now to the Scottish Borders.
As well as experience gained with livestock on our farm, while working for Swinfen Farms, Lichfield and as a stockman for ICI Teesside Farms in Guisborough, Cleveland, my formal qualifications are a Bachelor of Science degree in Agriculture from Harper Adams University College, Newport and a Masters degree in Business Administration from the Open University.
In 2004, I was invited to join the Judges Panel and have since officiated at local and County shows in Scotland, England and Ireland including Moffat, Newcastleton, Penrith, Haddington, Staffordshire County, Wensleydale, Angus, Tullamore, Fife and Cumberland. I was also a co-judge in 2008 for the South West Regional Flock Competition and the Welsh Region in 2009.
The Jacob Sheep Society (www.jacobsheepsociety.co.uk) has a breed standard developed to maintain and improve the characteristics of the breed. I stick rigidly to the breed standard, paying particular attention to size, confirmation and stature.
